Easter holidays in Florence: why late Easter breaks win

The Easter school holidays are the first chance of the year for a family trip to Italy. In 2027 Easter Sunday falls early, on 28 March, so most English schools break up around 26 March and return in mid-April. In 2028 Easter moves to 16 April, which suits a Tuscan farmhouse much better.
Florence at Easter
On Easter Sunday Florence stages the Scoppio del Carro: a centuries-old cart of fireworks is set off in front of the Duomo by a mechanical dove. It is free, crowded and worth seeing once. Easter Monday (Pasquetta) is also an Italian holiday, so museums and restaurants are busy with Italian families as well.
The better plan: the second week
Use the first days of the holidays at home and travel in the second week. Florence is calmer, days reach 18–20 °C, and the Boboli Gardens are green. Book the Uffizi and the Accademia (Michelangelo's David) in advance; Easter week sells out.
Tuscany around it
Mid-April is wildflower season in the hills. Lucca's walls are perfect for a family bike ride, and Collodi's Pinocchio Park is 30 minutes from Redolina.
Why Redolina
Redolina opens in April. From the farmhouse, Florence is about an hour away, Lucca 45 minutes and Pisa airport 55 minutes, which makes an easy base for a first Italian trip with children.
