August and the Summer bank holiday: Ferragosto in Tuscany

August is the classic family month and ends with the Summer bank holiday, on Monday 30 August 2027.
Ferragosto
On 15 August Italy celebrates Ferragosto. Many Florentines leave for the sea, some family-run shops and restaurants close for a week or two, and the city feels oddly quiet. Big museums stay open. On 10 August, the night of San Lorenzo, Italians watch for shooting stars.
Siena and the coast
The second Palio di Siena runs on 16 August. The beaches of Versilia are an hour away; go early or late in the day.
End of August
The last week before the bank holiday is calmer: Italians are back at work, the sea is at its warmest and evenings start to cool.
Why Redolina
A house to yourselves in the hills, a pool for the hot hours, and the coast or Florence for a day out.
